Battery Monitoring System

A Battery monitoring system with an independent power supply and 4K galvanically insulated design with CAN interface.

The CTS Battery Monitoring System is engineered to support controlling battery parameters such as State-of-Charge(SoC) or State-of-Health(SoH) to support operating safety. This module has a range of support such as optimizing cell charge, improving battery life, and promoting high battery capacity which collectively enhances performance.

All data collected from the BMS is provided to the application system, in real-time, giving accurate estimates of each parameter and promoting safe operation standards.

What is a battery monitoring system?

Battery Monitoring/Management Systems (BMS) are electronic systems that monitor the physical variables of a battery, such as current, voltage, and temperature, and prevents the battery from operating outside its safe operating area. Monitored variables are used to check the battery state, to calculate secondary data (eg. state of charge), report that data, control its environment, or for authentication.

Our standard module consists of a contactless Hall current sensor, a shunt resistor-based current sensor, a battery voltage sensor, and a temperature sensor. The four sensor signals are read by analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), processed by a programmable STM32 microcontroller, and provided at the output via the CAN interface. This allows for the module to be programmable so it can be integrated into almost any digital system.

How is CTS's battery monitoring system integrated?

A particular feature of the product is its independent power supply and galvanically insulated design. Therefore the device operates directly with 12V DC and can be attached on both high-side and low-side of the high voltage (HV) battery system. This allows the module to directly monitor the battery and the parameters within the electrical system.

CTS BMS Monitored Parameters

  • Voltage: Total, individual cell, min/max cell, or periodic tap
  • Temperature: Average, coolant intake/output, or individual cell
  • State-of-Charge (SOC) / Depth of Discharge (DOD): Battery charge level
  • State-of-Health (SOH): Remaining battery capacity
  • State-of-Power (SOP): Available power over a set time interval
  • State-of-Safety (SOS): Data to signify a safe state of operation
  • Coolant Flow: Air or fluid-cooled systems
  • Current: Inflow/outflow of battery current
