Mechanical encoders utilize physical contacts, typically in the form of conductive metal brushes, to establish electrical connections as the encoder shaft rotates. The contact between the brushes and the conductive tracks on the encoder generates electrical pulses which informs the control system of the rotational position of the shaft. This contacting technology is a reliable and cost-effective means of position sensing.
Optical encoders relies on the interruption of light beams to produce electrical signals. They consist of a light source (such as an LED), a disc with transparent and opaque sections, and a sensor. As the disc rotates, the interruptions in the light beam generate electrical signals which is used to determine angular positions. Since no mechanical contact occurs, optical encoders exhibit great longevity with rotational life spans of several million cycles.
